NATIVE RESTORATION VEGETATION

Truly Native to NS; Ethically Sourced

We are pleased provide a range of native vegetation species, including container stock and seeds, specifically for your restoration projects.

What is 'Truly Native' ?: We prioritize honesty and transparency in our offerings. We don't subscribe to misleading marketing tactics around the 'Native' status of species. Much of what is offered as 'Native' in the horticultural world is composed of species that are:

  • Perhaps native to elsewhere in Canada or the US, but not necessarily native to Nova Scotia.

  • Cultivars of native species, which are often sterile clones that have been selectively developed in a nursery setting to accentuate various traits of the original source species (e.g., flower color/size, foliage characteristics, etc.).

When we label a species as 'Native' you can trust that it is genuinely native to Nova Scotia, and well suited to our unique Maritime environment. We prioritize using local genetics whenever possible.

Ethical Harvesting & Plant Rescue: All native seed is hand-harvested from natural environments in small quantities, so as not to deplete native populations. Some of our container stock is sourced from vegetation 'rescue' operations from natural areas that are pending destruction. Rescued vegetation is held in our nursery area until transplant viability can be determined.

Sanitation: All seed harvest and vegetation rescue is conducted with seed/soil sanitation in mind. Donor sites are evaluated prior to harvest for the presence of exotic and invasive species. Material is not collected from areas that are determined to be a risk for spreading exotic and invasive species - including some native invasives, such as Reed Canary Grass (Phalaris arundinacea).

Availability: We carry a limited supply of container stock, and recommend advance orders. We can source material from across the Province to suit your restoration site location, and specific restoration goals.
